Our Matrix Server

We are proud to announce the launch of our new Matrix server, yangon.ca. This initiative is a significant step towards fostering a more resilient and censorship-resistant online environment for our community members. The new server is a direct response to growing concerns over potential censorship and aims to provide a secure and open platform for communication, empowering users with greater control over their data and interactions.

The primary motivation for establishing our own Matrix server is to safeguard information freedom. By hosting our own infrastructure, we reduce our reliance on centralized services and mitigate the risks of platform-wide censorship that can affect communities on applications like Telegram.

Our new server embraces the core principles of the Matrix protocol, with federation enabled. This powerful feature allows members of The Yangon Club to not only communicate with each other but also to connect with the broader, global Matrix network. Users can join rooms on other Matrix servers and interact with individuals from different communities, creating a truly interconnected and decentralized communication experience.

Getting Started on yangon.ca

Joining our new Matrix server is a straightforward process. To register for an account, you will need to use a Matrix client application. However, please note that at this time, registration cannot be completed using the Element X client. This is because our server does not yet support the new Matrix Authentication Service (MAS), a feature we plan to implement in the future.

For a smooth registration experience, we currently recommend the following clients:

• Desktop/Web: You can use the official Element Web client or our self-hosted version at https://element.yangon.club.
• Mobile: For mobile users, we recommend Element Classic (the predecessor to Element X) or FluffyChat. Both are available on iOS and Android.

While Element X cannot be used for initial registration, you can log in and use it to access your yangon.ca account after it has been created with another client.

Don't forget to change "matrix.org" to "yangon.ca" while you're registering. If you choose to register with "matrix.org" or other servers, join #welcome:yangon.ca to get started.

To ensure a secure and welcoming environment, registration on yangon.ca requires a token. Please find the registration token at the bottom of this article.

Your Digital Keys to a Private Space

A cornerstone of the Matrix protocol is its robust end-to-end encryption, which ensures that your conversations remain private and secure. When you log in to your new yangon.ca account for the first time, you will be prompted to generate and save your encryption recovery keys.

It is absolutely crucial that you store these keys in a safe and secure location. Think of them as the master key to your encrypted conversations. If you log out and cannot remember your password, or if you log in from a new device, these recovery keys will be the only way to decrypt your past conversations. Without them, your encrypted message history will be permanently inaccessible.

When you log in with a new device, you can either verify the new session from one of your existing, logged-in devices or use your recovery key to regain access to your encrypted chat history.

A New Home for Our Community

Upon successful registration, you will automatically be added to a number of essential rooms for The Yangon Club. From these initial rooms, you will be able to discover and join a wider array of topic-specific rooms and interest groups within our community.

We are also excited to announce that we have plans to introduce more automation into certain rooms in the near future, which will enhance the user experience and provide new functionalities for our members.
